General Condition: THE SABRE 36 EXPRESS was introduced in 1996 and became an instant classic, built in the Maine tradition of quality workmanship. Sabre has built a reputation for exceptional build quality and timeless good looks. The 36 Express has been turning heads for decades. A great family cruiser, MISCHIEF is nicely equipped and has had numerous recent upgrades and additions. Powered by twin Caterpillar 3116 diesels, she’ll cruise at 20 knots.

The Sabre Design Team designed the Sabreline 36 Express to suit an emerging new boating lifestyle, while meeting the desire for exceptional good looks, outstanding performance, and unequalled quality above and below decks. MISCHIEF is the best equipped and best maintained yacht of its kind available today. She was Sabre’s show boat for the 1996 Ft. Lauderdale Boat show, finished to an especially high standard for that show, with a dark green awl-gripped hull and cream topsides. She was factory equipped with air conditioning and a generator, unusual for boats from Maine. As an “Express Cruiser,” it was designed to be an open cockpit boat with a cabin forward. The cockpit is divided into a midships “helm” area and a sizable cockpit aft. MISCHIEF has been meticulously maintained and upgraded over the past nine years to a very high standard by a knowledgeable and experienced owner.

The roomy aft cockpit has space for several chairs, plus a built in 2 person bench seat and table. There is a stern door with a stern swim platform with boarding ladder, a door in the transom to access it, and a hot & cold freshwater wash-down wand to rinse off after a swim. There are two rod holders as well. Three hatches provide access to the generous storage space below deck. In addition to the standard equipment, this boat has a nice set of removable stainless steel davits, which stow below the deck when not in use, a set of spare propellers, and a galvanized Danforth spare anchor with rode. There is a spotlight on the mast which lights up the cockpit brightly at night, plus lower intensity cockpit footlights in the cockpit and helm areas when you want a nice ambience. The cockpit and helm areas each have a removable floor to access those areas if major work needs to be done.

Behind the stylish stainless steel windshield, the helm area is to starboard, with the engine controls, compass, and electronics mounted on a pod that tilts aft for easy access to the wiring. There is a waterproof navigation station to port. The companionway is in the center. It has had teak handrails added for safety. The two adjustable pedestal seats provide seating for each area, and there is a bench seat aft of the navigators seat with storage and propane tank below the bench seat. Steering is hydraulic. Electronics are current model Furuno units all linked together, including a really nice Furuno Model TZT-14 14” chart plotter with AIS and radar overlays, autohelm, and fishfinder. Other electronics include a Simrad forward-looking depth sounder, and a new ICOM IC-M506 VHF radio with loud hailer and horn functions as well as current safety features including emergency AIS alarms & MOB alarm. There is a new dual trumpet air horn. The boat has an EPIRB unit plus personal locater beacons on two of the inflatable life jackets. There is an “ARTIC” 65 qt capacity hard cooler that will hold a bag of ice cubes for over 3 days in hot weather. It also serves as seating for two more people.

The roomy galley (to port) is similar to those found in Sabre’s sailboats, with teak millwork, good counter space, drawer space, an AC/DC refrigerator, a 2 burner propane fueled range with an oven, and a stainless steel sink with pressure hot & cold water. Hot water is provided by a new 5 gallon water heater that runs on A/C electric power or engine heat. Added features on this boat include a Seagull Mark IV water purifier (no more water bottles to carry) and an added 17” square AC/DC freezer, which greatly extends cruising range. Sharing the center of the boat with the galley is a u-shaped dinette, which converts to a double berth to starboard. Behind the dinette and under it are generous storage lockers and a unique Sabre small tool drawer. At the aft end is a well-designed electric panel, hinged for easy access to the wiring in back of the panel. At the forward end, there is a flat screen TV. An added Rogue Wave WIFI antenna/amplifier that picks up most local WIFI channels. There is a stereo CD player that is Sirius-ready. Below that there is a nice liquor locker, designed to keep the bottles from hitting each other. Forward is a head/shower with an electric head, lavatory, and shower wand, accessed from either the cabin or the stateroom. The forward centerline berth is nearly queen-sized, with a comfortable custom mattress and custom bed linens. There is extensive storage on either side of the bed, with drawers underneath and a hanging locker, plus a door for privacy. The teak joinery has been installed to Sabre’s usual very high standards and feels comfortably warm throughout the cabin.

The side decks and forward deck are generous, with hand holds added to the windshield sides and “boarding posts” added at the aft ends of the deck rails for safety. The main feature of the forward deck is the anchor, a 45 pound galvanized CQR, with 200 feet of 5/16 galvanized chain, with a chain lock to keep the anchor in place when underway. A new Lofrans windlass manages the ground tackle easily, and there is an added salt-water washdown pump to clean the mud away. There is a spare 150’ rode and generous dock line stowage in two lockers up forward as well. The bow pulpit has a socket and staff for your favorite burgee.
